Erweiterte Fassung der Dissertation Universität Bonn. - Johann Jakob Wepfer (geb. 1620, Schaffhausen, gest. 1695, ebd.): «Medizinstudium in Strassburg, Padua und Rom, 1647 Dr. med. in Basel. 1647 Stadtarzt von Schaffhausen, 1650 Klosterarzt von Rheinau, 1675 Leibarzt der Herzog von Württemberg und des Markgrafen von Baden-Durlach sowie 1685 des Kurfürsten von der Pfalz. Als viel gefragter Praktiker war Johann Jakob Wepfer oft konsiliarisch unterwegs. Er kombinierte genaue Krankenbeobachtung mit nachfolgender Leichensektion und suchte so gewonnene Krankheitserklärungen im Tierexperiment zu bestätigen. Seine zahlreichen neuen anatomischen und pathologischen Erkenntnisse publizierte er in den Abhandlungen der kaiserlichen Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina (deren Mitglied er 1685 wurde) und den mehrfach nachgedruckten "Observationes anatomicae" (1658). Seinen Hauptbeitrag lieferte er in der Toxikologie. Mit seiner Schrift über den Wasserschierling ("Cicutae aquaticae historia et noxae" 1679) begründete er die Methodik der systematischen, tierexperimentellen Giftprüfung. Als Lehrmeister Johann Conrad Peyers (1653-1712) und seines Schwiegersohns Johann Conrad Brunner wurde er zum Gründer der sogenannten Schaffhauser Ärzteschule. Der umfangreiche Nachlass (über 12'000 Blätter) von Briefen, wissenschaftlichen Schriften und ärztlichen Aufzeichnungen wurde erst ansatzweise erforscht» (HLS).
