Despite facing discrimination because of her gender, she became the first woman chair of a local section of the American Chemical Society and won 22 awards and honors for her laboratory's research. With degrees from the University of Chicago, University of Colorado and Yale University, Macy served as director of the Nutrition Research Laboratories at the Merrill-Palmer School and as director of the Research Laboratories for the Children's Fund of Michigan. Harriet J. Kelly was research statistician at the Merrill-Palmer School and held degrees from the University of Minnesota and the University of Iowa.
