Contains an Introduction, as well as information on the Immune System, Hematopoietic System: Animal Models for the Bone Marrow; Gastrointestinal Tract; Lung; Kidney; Other Factors Affecting Experimental Outcome; Conclusions; Acknowledgments, and References. Since their inception, the eight centers for Medical Countermeasures against Radiation (CMCRs), under the purview of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, with National Cancer Institute involvement, has been identifying and developing mitigating agents that can be used to treat the civilian population after a radiological event. Given the necessity for a consensus on appropriate animal model use across the network to allow for comparative studies, investigators from each of the Centers of Medical Countermeasures against Radiation organized and met for an Animal Models Workshop. This report provides the workshop findings. fair (some highlighting and ink underlining and notations to text). Staplebound (1 staple at top left corner of cover; that corner is bent).

Since the inception of the eight Centers for Medical Countermeasures Against Radiation, under the purview of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases with National Cancer Institute involvement. Since a focus of these Centers is to develop agents for prophylaxis, mitigation, and treatment of radiation injury, the testing of such countermeasures inevitably requires the use of animal model systems.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - When Microsoft releases Windows Vista, the new operating system will support applications that employ graphics now used by computer games-clear, stunning and active. The cornerstone for building these new user interfaces is XAML ('Zammel'), the XML-based markup language that works with Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), Vista's new graphics subsystem. An acronym for Extensible Application Markup Language, XAML offers a wealth of new controls and elements with exciting capabilities, including animation and rendering of 3D graphics. Windows developers are already jazzed by the possibilities of using XAML for fixed and flow format documents like PDF and HTML, 2D and 3D vector-based graphics, form development, animation, audio and video, transparent layering, and a lot more. Many feel that XAML will eliminate the need for multiple file formats or plug-ins (read: Flash), while lowering development costs and reducing time to market. The problem is, most developers don't know XAML. While it is fairly easy to understand, you still need a quick guide to bring you up to speed before Vista's release, and that's where this book's simple, no nonsense approach comes in.XAML in a Nutshell covers everything necessary to design user interfaces and .NET applications that take advantage of WPF. Prerequisites such as Microsoft's new unified build system, MSBuild, and core XAML constructs and syntax-including shortcuts-are all presented with plenty of examples to get you started. The Core XAML Reference section lets you dig even deeper into syntax rules and attributes for all XAML elements with a series of quick-reference chapters. This section divides XAML elements into logical categories of elements, controls, shapes and geometry, layout, animations, and transformations for easy reference.XAML in a Nutshell helps you learn, firsthand, how to use this XML-based markup language to implement the new generation of user interface graphics. As one reviewer noted, 'Strong code examples and an efficient, conversational style take the tedium out of learning XAML and make the subject understandable-even interesting.'.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - J.J. Broerse, Radiobiological Institute TNO, Rijswijk, The Netherlands, and T .J. MacVittie, Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute, Bethesda, MD, USA. During the past decade, relatively few new studies have been initiated on the response of different species to high-dose, total-body irradia tion. For information on the LDSO/30d (the dose which produces 50 percent lethality within 30 days), one is generally referred to the older literature (e. g., Bond, Fliedner and Archambeau, 1965). Compari son of experimental data reveals considerable variations in LDSD values even after total-body irradiation with conventional X rays, ranging from 4 to 6 Gy in the monkey, 7.1 to 9 Gy in the rat and from 6.4 to 9 Gy in the mouse (see also Hall, 1978). Part of the discrepancy in the LDso values can possibly be attributed to inadequacies in the dosimetry procedures and exposure arrangements employed. As far as clinical experience is concerned, there is now an appreciable amount of information available about the effect of total body irradiation as a conditioning treatment for bone marrow transplan tation in patients suffering from leukaemia or aplastic anaemia. The results from different centres, including the incidence of complications such as radiation pneumonitis, are considerably different. This can part I y be connected with the application of different radiation sched ules: large single dose versus fractionated or protracted irradiation.

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. First Printing [Stated]. xii, [2], 365, [5] pages. Illustrations. References. Index. Name in ink of previous owner present. Some edge discoloration. This book represents the proceedings of the Second International Symposium on the Pathophysiology of Combined Injury and Trauma, held at Wintergreen, Va. in February, 1985 that was edited by investigators from the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute, Bethesda, Md. The term "combined injury" refers to the effects of radiation, wounds, burns, and blunt trauma in various combinations often occurring acutely and simultaneously. Clearly, this is a topic of both historical and contemporary importance. Major gains in this area are reflected in the tremendous salvage of life and limb in Vietnam compared with World War I. One must remember that providing medical aid to survivors of a nuclear or conventional catastrophe will be difficult with procedures in use today. The work described in this symposium--in the posters, the invited presentations, and the discussion times--focused our attention on some new approaches which may some day enable the medical professionals to prevent injury and effect simplified treatment of seriously injured people. It was sincerely hoped that the medical advances that would come from the studies such as described in this symposium would never be needed to treat victims of a nuclear disaster but that such advances would be used only to better the life for trauma victims and other patients.

Dr. MacVittie, is recognized internationally as an expert on the effects of radiation on the hematopoietic and gastrointestinal systems in large animal models and their treatment, in vivo, with supportive care and selected organ-specific medical countermeasures against acute and delayed effects of acute radiation exposure. He earned M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in radiation biology at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo and has more than 40 years of experience as a radiobiologist in the field of experimental hematology. He has published 184 peer-reviewed manuscripts and 47 chapters in books or proceedings. He has co-edited 5 books published from meetings organized on radiation effects and treatment of the ARS. He has served as a member of NATO Radiation Research Study groups. His early work demonstrated the efficacy of supportive care and hematopoietic growth factors on increasing lineage-specific cell recovery and survival in myelosuppressed and lethally irradiated large animal models.
