First edition, third issue of volume one, first editions of volumes two and three. 3 volumes: (4), 483; (8), 556; (2), iv, 320 pp. Front joint to volume one cracked (but holding firmly), all volumes with some foxing, some light damping to endpapers of the first two volumes, affecting a few pages of text; still a good solid copy. First two volumes in somewhat later calf, gilt rules framing both boards, gilt title and rules on spine, marbled edges; volume three rebound recently to approximate the first two. Maclure (1763-1840), a native of Scotland, was a pioneer American geologist and agricultural educator. His Observations on the Geology of the United States (1817) included the first geological map of the United States. Intent on establishing an agricultural school to educate the working classes, he purchased a large tract of land in Spain 1819, but the project failed and he moved his operations to Robert Owens's community of New Harmony, persuading Thomas Say, Charles LeSeur, and others to join him there. Ill health eventually occasioned his move to Mexico, where for years he contributed "letters and articles on political, social, and economic topics to the New Harmony Disseminator. These papers were collected and published" in the volumes offered here (see DAB). Contemporary book ticket on the front pastedown of the first two volumes, "Remus Payne / Kentucky" enclosed within a decorative border; Payne (1811-1880) was a Scott County, Kentucky, land owner and farmer who served in the state legislature in the 1850s.
