"At last - here is a single volume authoritative history of Scottish architecture. This compact yet comprehensive account combines factual description of the vast and fertile range of visual forms and key architects in each period with a wide-ranging analysis of their social, ideological and historical context. As Scotland has often been closely involved with new trends in western architecture, this book highlights the interaction of Scottish developments with broader European and international movements. From the beginnings of the Renaissance in the 15th century right up to the 1990s, this much-needed survey covers the entire post-medieval story in one volume.".…

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 288 pages. The castle is an iconic building type and one of the most distinctive archite ctural emblems in the British Isles. This book covers the entire history of Scot land's castles, from the very first stone castles in the 13th century to those o f the present day. Ever since its medieval origins, the concept of the castle ha s undergone constant changes, with the tall tower house being superseded in the 17th century by the classical house, and in the 18th century by a fashionable bu ilding type designed by major architects such as Robert Adam. While Scotland's C astle Culture in many ways marched with European fashion, much was distinctively Scottish - as seen in the reluctance to abandon castles as residences, and then in the power of the castle's resurgence as a building type during the years whe n Scotland was one of the most ferociously modernising countries in the world: t he Victorian age. At this time there were few modern building types that were no t candidates for castellation: not just houses, but also farms, lighthouses, ban ks, schools and even railway stations. Lastly, the book takes us to the present, where most castles, of whatever century, are now protected for their value as n ational heritage. The drama and diversity of this story is reflected in the book 's structure: five chapters covering the main chronological phases of Castle Cul ture, followed by ten individual case studies of representative examples, from m edieval Bothwell to Iain Begg's late 20th-century Raven's Craig. …

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This book takes a timely look at how Scotland's national politics have been expressed in its buildings, exploring the role the architecture of Scotland - in particular its world-famous 'castle architecture' - has played the ongoing narrative of Scots national identity.Scotch Baronial examines many of the country's most important historic buildings - from the palaces left behind by the 'lost' monarchy, to revivalist castles and proud town halls - examining their architectural styles and tracing their wildly fluctuating political and national connotations. An introduction to a key episode in British architectural history, and a valuable resource for anyone studying the role of architecture in narratives of nationalism and empire globally, Scotch Baronial ends by bringing the story into the 21st century, exploring how contemporary 'neo-modernist' architecture in today's Scotland, as exemplified in the Holyrood parliament, relates to concepts of national identity in architecture over the previous centuries.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Romanticism made Scotland famous. It critically shaped the course of Scottish culture, while impacting on cultures elsewhere and inaugurated the country's still-flourishing and lucrative tourist industry. This book is about Edinburgh's most emblematic architecture over the long 19th century: the castellated and stone-built cityscape of national revivalist architecture. It sets out why Scotland had, by the 1820s, become one of Europe's great centres of Romanticism, with its majestic highland scenery. It reveals how Edinburgh developed as both a hub for many travellers who were drawn to Romantic Scotland through the work of James Macpherson's Ossian and Sir Walter Scott, including Schinkel, Mozart, Verne, Turner, and Joseph Haydn (who composed pieces based on Scots songs). The book also provides a long-overdue counterbalance to the contrastingly much-examined and much-published topic of Enlightenment Edinburgh, showing how this and Romantic Edinburgh have co-existed comfortably (and perhaps necessarily). It examines how Edinburgh's Romanticism was similarly driven by intellectuals, amongst whom were Enlightenment figures and artistically talented individuals, as well as discussing the legacy of those who contributed to the Romantic cityscape of today; an architecture that provides much of the character of the UNESCO-designated World Heritage Site and of the city that countless tourists come daily to see.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The first full revision of the first of the volumes for the Buildings of Scotland series This is the first fully revised and expanded guide to the buildings of Lothian since Colin McWilliam's pioneering volume of 1978, with new colour photography, maps, and plans to accompany the unrivalled coverage of the area. Lothian surrounds the capital city of Edinburgh, which has done much to influence the character of its buildings. Among these are some important medieval relics, including the internationally famous Rosslyn Chapel, the royal Renaissance palace at Linlithgow, and the ruins of great castles and tower houses. Among major country houses, none are more splendid than Hopetoun and the ducal seat of Dalkeith Palace but Lothian also has the extraordinarily well-preserved Newhailes and mighty Gosford House. This is also an area of picturesque small towns and resorts along the Firth of Forth with outstanding villas for the Edwardian elite, and rural villages of unspoiled character, preserving remains of their agricultural heritage. The industrial legacy is important, including not only one of the most complete collieries in Scotland but also the world-famous Forth Rail Bridge. This volume is an essential reference for visitors and residents alike.…
