One of the four first Ashkenazi machzor volumes printed in America (all published in 1854 by Henry Frank). Based upon the celebrated Wolf Heidenheim edition, Henry (Chaim) Frank of New York published in 1854 2 prayer-books for the Days of Awe: This volume for the New Year, as well as a volume for Yom Kipur. This enabled the newly rising community of German American Jews to conduct services according to their own custom, as opposed to that of the Sephardic rite. Frank went on in later years to issue other volumes for other Holidays, and reflecting the customs of the Polish Jews as well. OCLC: 45963598. OCLC lists only 2 copies of this volume anywhere (Columbia and Yale). A set (New Year and Yom Kipur) with repairs sold at auction for over $17,000 with commissions in 2012. The First Complete Machzor (Jewish Prayer Book Set for the full year) printed in America, a stunning complete set. ? ? ?? Isaac Leeser (1806-1868) was a central leader of American Jewry in the mid-19th Century, the stalwart defender of Orthodoxy against the rise of the Reform movement. He was the head of the Jewish community of Philadelphia and acted as a cantor, philosopher publisher, and author of many sermons and essays. He was key in the founding Jewish institutions and publications central to the building of Judaism in America, including the original Jewish Publication Society, the Jewish Sunday School movement, and many key translations of Hebrew texts into English. ? ? ?? As such, he was the first Jew to translate the Hebrew Bible into English, publishing The Five Books of Moses in 1845, followed by the full Twenty-Four Books of the Old Testament in 1853. His other major translation is that offered here, the first Machzor (Prayer Book set for the full year) published in America, in 1837-1838.Publication in this case was a complex project. Leeser based his new translation on an earlier London edition, improving upon both the English translation and the original Hebrew, which are presented in facing pages. Once the translation was ready for publication, he ordered new Hebrew types from Europe but could not find printers who were familiar with Hebrew?so he taught two Christian printers Hebrew in order to prepare them for the printing. ? ? ?? In spite of the difficulties involved, all six volumes of the machzor set were published in a total of only 13 months. Leeser marketed his prayer book to audiences in both America and the British Empire and therefore included prayers on behalf of a monarch (British) and a republican government (America). The work also includes a fascinating two-page list of subscribers spanning the Eastern US as well as Jamaica at the end of Vol. VI. The same volume here includes interesting margin notes in pen from a period Rabbi or service leader. ? ? ? With an original run of only 500 sets, complete sets of the first edition such as this are very rare. A set sold at Christies in 2006 for $60,000. SUBJECT(S): Seder -- Liturgy -- Texts. 1st edition with Parody Hagadah & Parody Purim Machzor (3rd edition overall). Later library binding, 8vo, 101 pages includes portraits. 21 cm. In Hebrew. Title translates as "Tractate Derech Eretz HaHadashah ['The New Way of the Land']: With Rashi's commentary and additions: A small Machzor, including a Passover Haggadah according to the American version, Akademot .: New Booklet."The Hebrew term derech erets translates literally as, "the way of the land." Meaning either what people tend to do or what people ought to do.In common speech, derech erets means acting courteously and with respect, particularly towards parents, elders and teachers. This third edition of Abraham Kotler's parody of Jewish immigrant life in the United States, structured as a Talmud text, has two added sections, a parody Haggadah titled "Machzor Katan," as well as a parody Machzor for Purim and year round. The Pesach Hagadah and piyyutim are written in a comedic style on the lives of Jews in America, "With an akdamot piyyut against the Reform Rabbi Dr. [Isaac Mayer] Wise of Cincinnati." "And now that we have come to America we are all chachamim, we are all nevonim, we are all zekenim, we are commanded to count shekels and all who do so generously, harei zeh meshubach.Baruch Columbus which revealed America to the Jewish people.all the horse-thieves are appointed heads of communities, all the shaved ones are placed above the bimah - all these are provided for from tzedakah.". Abraham Kotler (died 1943), "a Lithuanian born author, immigrated to America in 1888. Kotler first lived in the city of Sharon, Pennsylvania and later settled in Cleveland, Ohio. His most concentrated efforts were devoted to working in a bookstore that became a type of center for all interest in Hebrew books and a place for secular discussions between wise students in the city. Kotler was a pioneer of Hebrew parody and satire in America. In his work Masechet Derech Eretz HaChadasha [this work] he ridicules immigrant life in America in the form of gemara with commentary by 'Rashi' and 'Tosofot.' The text contains seven separate chapters each on a different subject of immigrant life in America. The seven chapters deal with topics ranging from how new immigrants are treated in America, the importance of money in the New World, the willingness to give up certain Jewish observances in America, the beginnings of assimilation and celebrations of secular holidays in their new home, and how many Americans seem to be egocentric individuals. Kotler's parody.was.reprinted in 1927 in Tel Aviv. In this printing he made a few additions. It no longer was only a Talmud Parody entitle Masechet Derech Eretz HaChadasha, but now it also contained a parody on the Passover hagadah titled Machzor Katan, and a section titled Yalkut Chadash, which contains articles, songs, and words of humor for Purim and all year" (Sarah Smiley, An Annotated Translation of Masechet Derech Eretz HaChadasha, 2010). SUBJECT(S): Parodies, Hebrew. Satire, Hebrew. Hebrew wit and humor. OCLC: 41894688. Ex-library, very good and stable copy. Good+ Condition (BK) (YID-48-116-CCEL-'xmgg). …
