In den Warenkorb3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. He praises Macgregor's book for representing 'most faithfully the spirit of the original. This I take it is the chief merit of any translation.' Macgregor's 'employment in this manner so distinct from the ordinary pursuits of the leisure of an officer, proves the work to be "con amore"'. He mentions the collection of 'Professor Jacobs', feeling that such work will 'give the author a high standing amongst the scholars of our country, but it is for those who engage in such works to be generally aware that as a commercial speculation they are not likely to succeed.' Referring to Blackwood's Magazine, he states that he is himself 'in the habit of writing for a very popular periodical, and finding no place for classical articles. The public taste is not sufficiently chastened and refined. Otherwise I believe that the works of Walter Savage Landor would rank with the first of the day.' He does however feel that things are turning in the right direction, 'which is to divorce scholarship from pedantry'. In a postscript he states that he has 'several connexions in the Indian army, amongst others Dr. Marshall who I believe was chief of the original staff in Burmah, and is now in this country'. Macgregor is not named, but the item comes from a batch of his papers. His 'Translations from the Greek Anthology' was published without date in London by Nissen and Parker. Macbride oversaw the move (completed in 1822) of Magdalen Hall from alongside Magdalen College to the site of the defunct Hertford College, after which it was renamed in 1874.

A good long letter, full of content, thanking him for a presentation copy of his 'Translations from the Greek Anthology' (published without date in London by Nissen and Parker). He has perused most of Macgregor's translations 'with great pleasure, & several with a sentiment which the word pleasure too coldly expresses'. He has not 'examined them critically, comparing them minutely with the Greek text, in order to satisfy myself, whether the meaning of the Authors was faithfully rendered. I have thought it better, & more consonant with your professed design, to look at your translations from your own point of view, and judge whether you have clothed the spirit of the original in the dress, which the Authors themselves had they written not in Greek but in English, would probably have employed.' An interesting discussion of the difficulties of translating from Greek ('the most flexible of all languages') into English ('its structure singularly devoid of flexion') follows. He praises some of the work of the Greek and Roman poets as 'literary gems, polished to a finished perfection, & with a chaste beauty of setting which leaves nothing to be desired'. On the final page of the letter he has, as he explains, 'jotted down a few words phrases, & lines, which, by a careful elaboration, you may perhaps amend', although he considers that 'all in all your translation seems to me to be in general remarkably well, & sometimes felicitously rendered'.

The recipient is not named, but the letter is addressed to Major Robert Guthrie Macgregor (1805-1869), and concerns his 'Translations from the Greek Anthology', which was published without date in London by Nissen and Parker. Bandinel returns Guthrie his 'very best thanks for the Honor you have done this Library and the humble individual who has the care of it, in sending two copies of your translation from the Greek Anthology'. He anticipates 'great pleasure from the perusal of the Volumes, which would be not a little encreased [sic] from the knowledge that the Author was educated at the same school and by the same celebrated individual as himself viz Dr Valpy.'.
