Philadelphia, re-printed And sold by Stewart & Cochran. 1794 334 pages + 1 page of ads. Once bound in full leather, now not. Leather spine intact and front board present but detached. Rear board missing. Some scribbled and notations in ink on the inside front cover and endpaper. First blank page has writing on it as well, "Eli Shankle his book bought at the widow Halleys March the 21 day 1807 price 100 cents Eli Shankle." The name William Halley signed on the title page. Some pencil notations on the title page, calculating the age of the book in the 1870s. On the last page is written "Eli Shankle 1807 Thomas Berry 1777 Ely Shankle his hand and pen 1234567" Two volumes bound together, each with a title page. Text block fine, pages thin and uniformly faded. The book comes from a Washington DC auction-house. This is significant because there is a well documented William Halley who lived on King Street in Alexandria in the from the 1780s until his death in the early 1800s. He left his property to his wife Esther Halley. The book itself is scarce in an early edition -- it seems to have been first published in 1772. It was popular in America, and was printed there as far west as Pittsburg and Kentucky, in addition to at the eastern presses.

Collated, complete.The Reverend John Macgowan (1835-1922) was a British Congregational missionary who spent many decades in China, particularly in Fujian province.An informative and engaging portrait of traditional Chinese society written by a long-term resident and observer during a period of profound cultural encounter, Macgowan combines anecdotal observation with commentary on the character, habits, and institutions of Chinese society as encountered by Western residents. In the publisher's original cloth binding.Externally, smart. Slight fading, rubbing, and bumping to spine and extremities. Slight rubbing marks with the odd faint spot of damp staining to upper perimeters of boards. Slight loss to cloth at head of rear joint. Offsetting to endpapers with the odd spot. "The Amoy dialect is one of the four principal dialects which, with their varieties, are spoken by at least seven millions of people. These dialects viz: the Chang-chow, the Chin-chew, the Tung-an, and the Amoy, extend to about one hundred miles North, West, and South of Amoy" (introduction).

Prize bookplate dated 1904 to front paste-down, binder's ink-stamp to verso of front free-endpaper. Slight scuffs to board, a little shelf-wear to extremities, slight loss to spine label, binding a little tight. Occasional spots of toning within. Generally, a very good copy. John MacGowan (1835-1922) was a Belfast missionary, who first visited China in 1860 with the London Missionary Society. MacGowan wrote fifteen books on China, and spent the last 50 years of his life travelling and living in the country.
