Macewen beca…me interested in the biology of bone and carried out a long and critical series of experiments on animals in order to determine the manner in which bones grow and the conditions underlying their repair. He came to the conclusion that the membrane which covers bone (periosteum) cannot produce bone. He published an account of his inquiries in The growth of bone. Sir William Macewen (1848-1924) schottischer Chirurg, war ein Schüler von Joseph Lister, dessen antiseptische Techniken er…systematisch ausbaute und entsprechende streng einzuhaltende Handlungsabfolgen und Vorgehensweisen im Operationssaal einführte (gründliches Händewaschen vor der Operation, Sterilisation der Instrumente, sterile Kleidung usw.). Er ist für viele Innovationen in der Chirurgie bekannt. Zu seinen Pionierbeiträgen zur Orthopädie zählen die erste erfolgreiche allogene Knochentransplantation (bei der Wiederherstellung eines Oberarmknochens 1881) und Knieoperationen mit dem von ihm entwickelten und nach ihm benannten Osteotom.[1] Beides wurde viel bei den damals verbreiteten Knochendeformationen aufgrund von Vitamin-D-Mangel (Rachitis) von Macewen verwendet.
