Florence Elizabeth Maybrick [1862-1941], a American-born socialite, was convicted in 1889 of fatally poisoning her husband James Maybrick, a Liverpool cotton merchant with a history of drug abuse. She was released 15 years later. The case attracted a great deal of attention and generated a large bibliography. Macdougall, a Scottish barrister, provides a highly detailed, fact-based account of the investigation and trial while also examining broader issues of justice, gender, and the influence of public opinion.
