The original navy blue cloth binding remains exceptionally tight and clean, with the gilt tooling and publisher's device to the spine still notably crisp and unoxidised. The corners are sharp, entirely free from bumping, and the hinges are completely sound, indicating it has seen very little shelf-wear or use. Internally, the text block is bright and firmly set, though there is a hint of expected light spotting to the very top edge; the front and bottom edges remain crisp and clean. The original, unclipped dust wrapper displays some minor surface soiling and gentle toning, particularly to the rear panel and extremities, alongside a touch of rubbing at the spine ends, but it is entirely free from any significant tears or loss, remaining a highly presentable example. Catalogue Note: This is the true first edition of the initial volume in what would eventually become a highly regarded three-volume set, published individually before the subsequent volumes were realised in 1977 and 1981. It is presented in its original, unclipped state with the correct preliminary points for the 1969 printing. The work contains a dual-language presentation, featuring the added Gaelic title page Seann-Ã rain innse-gall, and includes detailed transcriptions of the original 1893 cylinder recordings. While complete sets of all three volumes appear on the open market with some regularity, finding this initial 1969 printing on its own, particularly in such a well-preserved state without institutional library stamps or major defects, is uncommon. A cornerstone of Scottish Gaelic musical scholarship, Hebridean Folksongs presents an unparalleled record of a fading tradition. Originally gathered in 1893 by Donald MacCormick in Kilphedir, South Uist, this vital collection of 'waulking songs,' rhythmic, communal work songs sung by women while shrinking home-spun tweed, was subsequently completed and edited by the eminent folklorist J. L. Campbell. Enhanced by Francis Collinsonâs meticulous transcriptions from original phonograph recordings and Fr.
