Light foxing to endpapers, bookseller ticket and ownership stamp to front endpapers, ownership stamp at head of first chapter. The scarce first state of Thomas Hardy's last completed novel, which received a harsh public response for its scandalous attack on class, marriage and wedlock. Purdy 86-87 pp.
