Top edge gilt, the othe…rs untrimmed. Gently toned throughout, otherwise internally clean. Rough but functional repairs to upper hinge, and a large crease across the upper board, with moderate spotting across both sets of endpapers. Cloth toned and splashed to spine, with fraying to tail cap, and a rough repair to torn and split head cap. A fair copy. When Bathsheba Everdene comes into an unexpected family fortune, she must take over her uncle's estate - navigating the rare position of being both a landowner and a young, unmarried woman. She therefore naturally encounters men who seek to make her life easier, and some who wish to take advantage of her.

The tragic tale, somewhat reminiscent of 'Les Miserables' (1862), of Michael Henchard, who has strength in both body and mind, but still fails to build a happy life for himself, after making a terrible mistake in his youth. First published in 1886.
