Ebd., S. mit leichten Knitterspuren. - Archibald Byron Macallum (1858 - 1934) war ein kanadischer Biochemiker und Gründer des "National Research Council of Canada". Zunächst Lehrer, ging er an die Universität Toronto wo er von Ramsay Wright beeinflusst wurde, mit 22 wurde er B.A. und betrieb wissenschaftliche Studien unter Wrights Anleitung für die nächsten Jahre. 1883 wurde er Dozent f. Biologie an d. Universität Toronto, daneben studierte er bei Wright u. H. Newell Martin v. d. John Hopkins Universität. 1888 promovierte er an d. John Hopkins Universität (Ph.D), 2 Jahre danach promovierte er in Medizin an der Universität Toronto. Dort wurde er erster Vorsitzender f. Physiologie. 1908 wurde er Vorsitzender d. Biochemie, einer neu erschaffenen Einrichtung, seine Einsatz für biolog. Wissenschaften wurde damit belohnt. 1917 organisierte er das National Research Council. Ab 1920 leitete er das New Department of Biochemistry an der McGill Universität. In seinen wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten beschäftigte er sich die meiste Zeit mit Messungen kleinster Mengen von Salzen und Ionen in biologischen Flüssigkeiten. 1901 bewies er, daß d. Chromatin im Zellkern Eisen enthält, in seinen früheren Jahren an der Universität Toronto passte er Meßmethoden für eine Vielzahl von Ionen zur Verwendung mit Gewebe u. Zellen an. 1906 wurde er für seine Erkenntnisse in die Royal Society aufgenommen. In Langzeitforschungen beschäftigte er sich mit dem Eisengehalt des Blutes u. anderer biologischen Flüssigkeiten. Seine Arbeiten bekamen eine zentrale Bedeutung bei der Entwicklung der Biochemie in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. (Quelle Wikipedia). …
