Collated, complete.This volume provides a comprehensive account of Japan and the Japanese people, ranging from its geography and history to its culture and national character.From prolific British travel and history writer Charles MacFarlane. who compiled this book through intrigue with the country after exchanges with an acquaintance who had spent time there. Based on many works authored by other foreign nationals who visited Japan, including Engelbert Kämpfer (1651-1716), Vasiliy Mikhaylovich Golovnin (1776-1831), and Carl Peter Thunberg (1743-1828) [The Japan Foundation Library]. Published in 1852. In November of the same year, the Perry Expedition - a U.S. fleet led by Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry to open up Japan - set sail. In the original cloth binding. Externally, with fading to the spine and mild rubbing and bumping to the extremities. A few minor damp spots to the front board. Ex libris bookplate of one Cliff Parfit to the front paste down.
