Hon var en av Sveriges första studentskor och en av de första yrkesjournalisterna, på Aftonbladet från 1884. År 1909 tillträdde hon som tidningens utrikeschef och blev därmed den första svenska kvinnan på en sådan post. Hon medarbetade även i Dagny och i finska tidningar och gav ut en bok om historikern Ellen Fries. Inom kvinnorörelsen var Maria Cederschiöld också tidigt verksam, bland annat i Föreningen för gift kvinnas äganderätt och Fredrika-Bremer-förbundet. När Svenska Kvinnornas Nationalförbund bildades 1896 blev det hennes främsta arena. Som sekreterare och från 1909 Nationalförbundets vice ordförande breddades hennes verksamhetsområde. Nationalförbundet var medlem i International Council of Women (ICW) och en stor del av Marias arbete i förbundet bestod i att delta i internationella kvinnokongresser, men även i rösträttskongresser anordnade av International Woman Suffrage Alliance (IWSA).
