Der Einband ist berieben und am Buchrücken leicht eingerissen, Vorbesitzer Vermerk auf der Titelseite mit Filzstift, sehr dezenter Nikotingeruch, die Seiten sind papierbedingt nachgedunkelt, ansonsten ein gutes Exemplar ohne Anstreichungen. -- (Auszug:) Vincent van Gogh wurde 1853 zu Groot-Zundert, einem Dorf in der niederländischen Provinz Nord- Brabant, als Sohn eines Pfarrers geboren. Er sollte, wie zwei seiner Onkel, Kunsthändler werden und war bis zu seinem 23. Jahre im Haag, in London und Paris im Geschäft von Goupil tätig. Von Paris ging er wieder nach England und war dort kurze Zeit Schullehrer auf dem Lande. Aber auch das befrie- digte ihn nicht; er wollte nun in Amsterdam Theo- logie studieren. Als auch dieses Studium ihm nicht bot, was er suchte, zog er nach Belgien, wo er als Evangelist bei den Minenarbeitern auftrat. Dort in der Borinage fing er an zu zeichnen. Er geht nach Brüssel und kommt 1881 in das Elternhaus zurück, wo er auf eigene Hand studiert, bis er nach dem Haag zieht und hier zuerst zu Malern in Bezie- hung tritt. 1883 zieht er in die Provinz Drenthe und bald darauf wieder nach Brabant, wo er bis 1885 energisch arbeitet. Die Sachen, die er da in Zundert zeichnete und malte, haben schon einen stark aus- geprägten persönlichen Charakter, sind aber noch ganz anders als die Bilder aus seiner späteren fran- zösischen Periode. 1885 besuchte er einige Monate die Akademie in Antwerpen und ist im Frühjahr 1886 in Paris, wo er durch seinen Bruder, den feinsinnigen Kunst- händler Theodor van Gogh, die Kunst der Impres- sionisten kennen lernt und mit einigen in persön- liche Berührung kommt. Kurz darauf siedelt er nach dem Süden über und arbeitet in Arles und später in San Remy. In seinen Leistungen aus dieser Periode schließt er sich viel mehr der modernen französischen als der Kunst seines Vaterlandes an. Den Abschluß seines Lebens bildet dann der Auf- enthalt in einer Nerven-Anstalt in Auvers-sur-Oise, wo er 1890 stirbt. Seine Kunst wurde während seines Lebens nur von ganz Wenigen geschätzt. Nach seinem Tode aber hat sie in steigendem Maße begeisterte An- hänger gefunden. Die folgenden Briefe sind teils an seinen Bruder, teils an seinen Freund E. Bernard gerichtet.
