With an advertisement to page [vii] Collated complete with a frontispiece and a further seven plates, inclusive of the scarce plate dated 1776 opposite page 224 of volume one. Philip Stanhope, the 4th Earl of Chesterfield was a British statesman, diplomat and man of letters. This work comprises of letters from Stanhope to his friends as well as further memoirs of Stanhope's life. The memoir on the Earl of Chesterfield is by Matthew Maty, who began the work with the assistance of Solomon Dayrolles. The work was completed by his son-in-law Justamond. These miscellaneous works are the first appearance of Maty's memoir and are an important account of the life and writings of an important and somewhat controversial British politician. In contemporary full calf bindings. Externally sound with the front board to volume one detached but present. Front joint to volume two held by cords only and may detach with further handling.
