In a likely contemporary full calf's leather binding with four raised bands to spine and gilt dentelles and embellishments (boards a little worn, lightly chipped and rubbed at spine tips and corners, and small flaw on upper edge). Internally neat, clean and fresh barring minor foxing on endpapers, a previous owner's name on front free endpaper, in contemporary script, and a small whole in the rear free endpaper. Binding firm, tight and square. Volume III (of four) only of this early French novel. 12mo.

Crowdy was the captain of the Badger - the sister ship to the Beagle and was latterly court marshaled - search the Naval and military magazine for the details of his ungentlemanly conduct. Books clean and bindings tight though boards of Vol I slightly less so.

Smollett's translation of Gil Blas appeared nine months after the publication of Roderick Random. This chronicle of a merry, philosophical young man presents special problems for a translator. Smollett, without always adhering to the literal expression of the novel's language, is true to its style, spirit, and ideas.
