Hardback. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. 1927. First edition. 123pp., a frontispiece and 7 other full-page black and white illustrations by Sean O'Sullivan. Michael Joseph MacManus (1888-1951) was an Irish author, journalist, humorist and bibliophile. While working as a journalist on Fleet St. (1910-16), he was a member of the Fabian society, and contributed many articles to Irish newspapers and journals. Returning to Ireland in 1916 as a freelance journalist, he became actively involved in the independence movement as a writer, his contributions to The Irishman expressing his nationalist beliefs of the time. 'So this is Dublin!' is a humorous profile of the city, included sketches such as 'The American's Guide to Dublin' and 'Irish Biography for Beginners'. The book is bound in the original grey paper covered boards with a brown cloth spine and black titling on the spine and front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling and light staining on the boards. There is a dent on the top edge of the front board and the spine ends are lightly bumped. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few small marks and there is a note written in pencil on the fore margin of page 17. The endpapers are lightly browned and foxed and there is an inscription dated 1932 on the front free endpaper. Sean O'Sullivan (illustrator). …

Edges and corner tips of dustwrapper also slightly creased and worn with slight loss. Small chip to the centre of the spine of the dustwrapper. Back panel and spine of dustwrapper discoloured, rubbed and marked (being a pale matt background). Spine of dustwrapper slightly darkened. ***361 pages including index at the back of the book. 190mm x 130mm. ***'Not by accident does a man become the voice of the people and a statesman of world fame, as Eamon de Valera has become today. In this biography M. J. MacManus (literary editor of The Irish Press), who is unusually well equipped for his task, has traced, vividly and dramatically, the development of a career which has been romantic in almost every phase. His book provides not only a new interpretation of the character and personality of a great Irishman but also embraces the political scene of which de Valera has been, and still remains, the central figure. The story, which is brought right up to date, sheds new light on much that has hitherto been obscure and, whilst facing controversial issues boldly and squarely, is entirely free from any tinge of bitterness.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***'A biography of the famous Irish politician, who went on to become the president of Ireland between 1959 and 1973. Written by Michael Joseph MacManus, a writer, humorist, and bibliophile. Macmanus wrote for many Irish journals and newspapers, and became the first literary editor of The Irish Press in 1935.' (Wiki) ***An early printing of the first Irish edition - very hard to find now in the original fragile wartime dustwrapper. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.…
