The first edition, a large folding hand coloured folding map, 84x 100cm, (33"x 39.58"), mounted on linen in panels, 21x 14cm., in original pebbled green cloth case, gilt gilt stamped cover titles in black stamped decorated borders and corner decorations, some of the panels on the reverso with child pencil scribbling type illustrations, not affecting the map, some slight toning on the map, good to very good condition, an extremely scarce and important item. The "Geological & Mineralogical Map of Sutherland" is a historic, landmark geological map created by Professor Matthew Forster Heddle and published in 1881. It was produced for the Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland by W. & A.K. Johnston to accompany Heddle's foundational papers on the "Geognosy of Sutherland" in the Mineralogical Magazine. Key Details & Historical Significance Scientific Contribution: The map was a major component in the fierce 19th-century academic debate regarding the "North-West Succession" of Scottish Highlands geology. It accurately mapped out the foundational layers of the region, including the ancient lower Lewisian gneiss, unconformable layers of Torridon sandstones, and upper layers of quartzites, limestones, and schists. Heddle utilized extensive chemical and mineralogical analysis to argue that certain layers, such as the Durness limestone, had a unique composition distinct from the surrounding rock suites.
