His educational pursuits in Germany, England, Paris, and Naples were designed to prepare him for his role as a scientific explorer, a goal he carefully planned alongside his close friend, William Nicholson, before embarking on his journey to Australia in 1841.Volume 2 of this work focuses on Leichhardt's scientific reconnaissance in eastern Australia, which he undertook alone over a span of two years. The final volume chronicles his significant explorations, including a successful expedition to Port Essington in northern Australia. They were named after Richard Hakluyt (1552-1616) a collector and editor of narratives of voyages and travels. The publications are primarily from English expeditions related to English interests from the 17th century on. These volumes cover the early search for the North West Passage through Hudson Bay, which was determined not to lead to the Pacific Ocean.
