Los miembros de la familia tienen la tarea compartida de hacer coincidir el contenido de ambas historias, habitualmente contradictorias entre sí, en una historia común. Esta tarea se resuelve, en la mayoría de los casos, adjudicando a los padres y/o abuelos un rol que los exime de la caracterización que figura en la enciclopedia. Uno de los medios para esta reconstrucción del pasado (junto con otros muchos) es la conversación familiar, en la cual se elaboran y fijan imágenes históricas que conforman a todos los miembros de la familia. La hipótesis de que la conciencia histórica posee dos dimensiones, una cognitiva y otra emocional, se apoya también en el hecho de que la memoria humana opera con diferentes sistemas para los recuerdos emocionales y para los cognitivos. Este fenómeno se hace especialmente visible cuando observamos cómo aquellos familiares pertenecientes a la generación que vivió la época del nacionalsocialismo, y que dicen haber "elaborado el pasado" y tener una visión crítica del mismo, relatan con gran emoción los recuerdos de "su época" y sus experiencias en la juventud hitleriana o en la fuerza aérea (Luftwaffe) del régimen. La naturalidad con la que las personas que vivieron esa época se sumergen y narran aquellos "buenos tiempos", evidencia que la diferencia entre los conocimientos históricos, resultado de vivencias significativas emocionales, y los conocimientos cognitivos posteriormente adquiridos, tiene grandes consecuencias en lo que hace a la transmisión del pasado.
