Modern systematic biological literature has hitherto lacked a comprehensive presentation of the systematics and the phylogeny of living organisms. This just published first volume makes a start in this direction. The aim of the investigations is to study the phylogeny of living organisms and to organize these findings into a phylogenetic system - a system which is to contain extinct fossil forms as well as living types in all their variety. Representative fossils must be included since they are the backbone of any phylogenetic work and reflect the course of evolution through time. The phylogenesis of living organisms cannot be explained without recourse to the physical and chemical evolution which preceded it and produced the pre-biotic compounds which ultimately led to unicellular organisms. This is the first time that a general system is drawn up for living organism in the form of a text-book/manual. The separate systematic treatment of bacteria (microbiology, botany), plants (botany, microbiology), fungi (botany, microbiology, mycology), unicellular organisms (microbiology, botany, zoology) and animals (zoology) has resulted in many untenable polyphyletic groupings (such as protozoa, phytoflagellata, zooflagellata and rhizopoda). An interdisciplinary approach is the only method of dissolving these polyphyletic taxa. Both author and illustrator have put a great deal of effort into creating illustrations of standard design.
