Its title quotes John Ruskin, wishing in 1849 'to render architecture historical'. The study is centered on the project and building of the Nordic Museum in Stockholm, designed in its main aspects around 1890 by the architect I G Clason. Criticism of contemporary design methodology, technology and style resulted in a new conception of form, combining basically unchanging types with dynamic elements of time and place. The large hall surrounded by galleries, forming the museum as built, is discussed in relation to models such as the house and the temple, the cathedral and the secular basilica. Composition as the fundamental means of architectural design is replaced by an attempt to re-establish the traditional process of historical transformation. Writings by Gottfried Semper, Eugène Viollet-le-Duc as well as by Clason himself and others are brought into the context, along with a number of related contemporary and historical buildings. The building of the Nordic Museum is seen to be focusing main trends of architectural thinking of the 19th century, concerned with the vernacular and the monumental, the peripheral and the historical".

In the decades following World War II, the former imperial capital of Istanbul entered a new stage of urban development. Large-scale transformations of its outline and edifices reimagined the cityscape while at the same time the conservation of the rich architectural heritage became a major issue. These efforts crystallized in a number of public space projects, where modernity and tradition were envisioned, manifested and negotiated artistically, structurally and socially. Major infrastructural projects competed with concerns for human scale as well as for local habits and vernacular tastes, as represented in architectural forms, ornamental details and visual arts. Stressing both the continuity and radical renewal of Istanbul in the period from 1950 to 1980, the studies in this volume analyse the emergence of the 'late modern' version of the megacity.
