Folding engraved map of the Eastern and Yellow Seas is present. Nicely bound to style in half brown morocco, the spine in six compartmen…ts with raised bands, tooled in blind, and with a red morocco lettering label, gilt. The map has had a short repair to a closed separation at one of the folds else is near fine. There is occasionally very light foxing and fingering else this is a near fine copy in a fine binding. The author was the ship's surgeon. The plates include as subjects a Lewchew (Loochoo) Chief, and a Corean (Korean) chief, Fort Maxwell, a Temple Garden at Lewchow and Islanders from Sir James Hall's Group. Places visited include Liu-Kiu (Okinawa), Korea, Manila, Macao. The Alceste was wrecked on the return voyage and the men, left on an island while Amherst sailed to Ba…tavia to get help, were set upon by Malay pirates before being rescued. This was one of the most popular Far East travel books of the first half of the 19th century. Bound in modern three quarters mottled calf and marbled boards, maroon title label. Fine Portrait, map and 5 colour plates. 337pp. 8vo.
