Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - When Jane Gooch first camped at Lake O'Hara in 1975, she could not have foreseen how important the Rockies would become in her life. She travelled from her home in Vancouver many times during the summer months to hike in the mountains, and her love of the alpine landscape eventually inspired her to study the artists who have painted in the Rockies. Her great enjoyment of the outdoors and a lifelong interest in art were combined with her academic background in writing and research. Mount Robson: Spiral Road of Art celebrates the centennial of Mount Robson Provincial Park with over a century of remarkable landscape paintings inspired by the Robson region in the Canadian Rockies. This volume includes an extensive introduction with historical and cultural background to the 50 colour plates, all documented and described, illustrating artists' works in a variety of styles and media from 1907 to 2012. Early artists include A.P. Coleman, the first explorer, and Group of Seven members A.Y. Jackson and Lawren Harris. In addition, the works of 17 contemporary artists show that the Mount Robson area continues to stimulate landscape art up to the present. Only ten of the images have been published before.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Bow Lake in the Canadian Rockies has inspired artists for almost a century. An early explorer who recognized the beauty of this alpine landscape was Jimmy Simpson, a legendary guide and outfitter who also collected art and painted in watercolours. He welcomed artists such as Carl Rungius, Belmore Browne and Peter and Catharine Whyte to his camp beside Bow Lake, which eventually became the storied Num-Ti-Jah Lodge. A.C. Leighton and his wife, Barbara, along with Walter J. Phillips were among the early artists at Bow Lake. This artistic tradition has been carried on with the current artist-in-residence program at Num-Ti-Jah, attracting many contemporary artists to paint the spectacular landscape. This volume includes an introduction describing the history of exploration and the early artistic activity generated by Jimmy Simpson, followed by brief biographies of 18 contemporary artists whose works are also included in the 47 colour plates, all documented and described, of which only 6 have ever been published before.…

That tradition is vividly portrayed in Gardens of Georgia, commissioned by the Garden Club of Georgia, Inc., to commemorate its sixtieth anniversary and to celebrate the heritage and beauty of Georgia's gardens. As noted by Georgia founder James Oglethorpe in 1732, Georgia has a happy climate. From the broad-shouldered mountains of the Blue Ridge, through the red clay of the rolling piedmont, across the sprawling piney coastal plain, and on to the subtropical islands on the Atlantic, Georgia is blessed with four regions of gardening opportunities, distinctly defined by differences in elevation, climate, soil, and natural vegetation.Writer William Mitchell and photographer Richard Moore have portrayed the wonders of gardens historic and contemporary, public and private, and urban, suburban, and rural from each of these regions. Whether illustrating overall gardenscapes or capturing intimate vignettes and individual blossoms, Richard Moore's photographs have a depth of color and clarity of detail that immerse the reader into a world of delightful splendor. The text by Willaim Mitchell not only describes the settings as they are today, but also spins a rich background of history in the context of the botanical Eden observed by early explorers. The richest legacy of each generation is to preserve and protect an always vulnerable natural environment and help nature bring forth its green and glowing cycles of rebirth. Gardens of Georgia celebrates that legacy, sharing the ongoing dream of paradise--a new Eden--whether it is in a grand formal garden from an earlier era or a small plot of perennials in a Georgia yard. ; FINE/FINE. FIRST EDITION, tissue-guarded frontispiece photographic portrait of Lytton, further plate with photograph of the same as Jane Warton, pp. xi, 337, [1], 16 [Publisher's list], crown 8vo, original purple cloth, backstrip sunned with lettering dulled, the W.S.P.U. motif to upper board stamped in green and white, a little rubbed at extremities, with a few marks to lower board, and a faint waterstain to leading edge of both, textblock edges toned with one or two spots, endpapers a little spotted, good. An important work by the suffragette, Lady Constance Georgina Bulwer-Lytton, who assumed an alternate identity as a working-class spinster named Jane Warton in order to highlight the treatment of low-income women at the hands of the authorities. She documents her arrest and incarceration, highlighting the appalling treatment of suffragettes, and the brutality of force-feeding, which was meted out in response to an organised hunger-strike. [With:] A 3pp. carbon typescript draft of the final passages in the book, with many variants to the text. [And:] A typed copy of her 2pp. letter to Herbert Gladstone, Home Secretary, referred to on p. 300 of the text - assuring him that her wearing of a disguise could hardly be in the line of a practical joke, given its consequences. [And:] A typed copy (with a small ms. correction) of the 'Report on Physical Condition of Lady Constance Lytton' made by Dr Marion Hunter at the beginning of February 1910, cited in full in the text, pp. 301-2. [And:] A contemporary postcard portrait of the author.…
