Mit dem Wiederaufschwung der Industrieproduktion und dem Entstehen einer mittelständischen Bundesrepublik aber entwickelte sich auch eine neue, vom amerikanischen International Style beeinflusste Architektur, zumal die Meister des Bauhauses als Berater aus den USA nach Deutschland zurückkehrten. Dabei ging es um viel mehr als nur um Stil. Konstruktionsdetails und andere technische Dokumente verdeutlichen, wie die architektonische Praxis in dieser Zeit danach strebte, soziale, materielle und politische Normen durch Formgebung zu kalibrieren. Im Zentrum all dieser Veränderungen standen Hans Schwippert und Sep Ruf, zwei Architekten, die sich politisch, religiös und beruflich verbunden fühlten. Schwippert, der Architekt des neuen Bonner Parlaments, arbeitete daran, die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung und die aufkeimende Konsumgüterindustrie gestalterisch in Einklang zu bringen. Ruf, dem Schwippert den Auftrag für den ersten westdeutschen Weltausstellungspavillon erteilte, fand Wege, ein architektonisches Schaffen zwischen Knappheit und Grosszügigkeit zu meistern.
