Edited by May McNeer. Illustrated by Lynd Ward. First of this edition with date on title page and single date on copyright page. An early illustrated work by Lynd Ward, edited by his wife. The jacket has two small woodcuts by him and there are ten full-page plates in the text along with some smaller ones. Scarce. A good copy with some light wear to the upper spine and one dented corner. There is a bookplate on the flyleaf else the text is very good and clean. The jacket is worn with some chips and tears along the top edge and two large pieces missing from the upper rear panel and spine bottom as well as a small stain in the upper corner of the front panel.

Original 1947 printing. 48pp. Duodecimo [18.5 cm] Tan saddle-stitched wraps, featuring cover art by the author's son, Lynd Ward, an artist known for his novels in pictures and his book illustrations. With small rust stains surrounding the staples of the binding. With reproduced black and white photos and with illustrations by Lynd Ward. Chicago-born illustrator, printer, and novelist Lynd Ward was known for his series of wordless novels illustrated with woodcuts and wood engravings, often referred to as a precursor to modern graphic novels. The author, Harry Frederick Ward (1873-1966), was a Methodist preacher and social activist. He founded the Methodist Federation of Social Services in 1907, and in 1933 he helped found New America, an organization devoted to economic reform and moving the country towards socialism. One of the more prominent organizations that Ward helped to co-found was the American Civil Liberties Union. Furthermore, in the 1930s Ward was also a leader in the American League against War and Fascism. Anti-war efforts would remain a passion of his throughout his life.

First edition. 396 pp. Octavo [21 cm]; Light grey cloth over boards, with printed title on front cover and spine. Corners are gently bumped. Cloth exhibits toning, most noticeably to spine and top and bottom edges of boards. Page edges are gently rubbed. In two illustrated, price-clipped dust jackets (nested), one very good, lightly sunned. There is a small (1.5 cm) tear to the top of its front spine joint, along with several small losses to edges. The second dust jacket is in good condition, with a much darker spine and a few more creases and splits along edges. Includes a short essay for each day of the year, organized into sections for the Astrological calendar, with illustrations for each by Lynd Ward.
