Zustand: very good. Reprint Edition. First Thus Printing. 391, illus., selected bibliography, index. Part of The Great Commanders series, a collection of first person accounts of history's great military leaders published under a common imprint and in a common format. Frederick the Great (1712-1786), King of Prussia, initiated t…he Seven Years' War in 1756; outfought the formidable French, Russian, and Austrian armies aligned against him; and established Prussia as a major power, thereby decisively influencing the next two centuries of European history. He was also a brilliant military thinker whose observations arose from extensive battlefield experience. This volume presents a balanced selection from Frederick's writings on strategy, tactics, and mobility; the problems of logistics and a two-front war; the combined use of infantry, cavalry, and artillery; the history of the Prussian army; the critical battles of the Seven Years' War; generalship as an art; and much more. A majority of this material is translated here for the first time in English and available nowhere else. The result is an invaluable glimpse into the inner thoughts of a military genius. This volume is based on selections from The Art of War and other works by Frederick, including military manuals and advice to officers on the conduct of battles. It gives a detailed, intimate picture of military life in the eighteenth century.

Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: fair. 323 pages, illus., maps, ftnotes, index, fr bd weak, sm tear in 2nd fr flylf, DJ scuffed: sm tears, sm pcs missing, inscribed by editor. Professor Jay Luvaas was one of the most versatile military historians of the second half of the Twentieth Century. He was not only…a noted Civil War historian, but also an expert on the wars of Frederick the Great and Napoleon. His first monograph addressed the European legacy of the American Civil War. This work is one he was especially proud of, based upon a conversation we had years ago, because he felt he had made accessible some of the seminal writings of one of the finest British military historians of the Victorian era. Without this modern edition of some of Henderson's writings, particularly his study of the Battle of Fredericksburg, he would be known, if at all, for his monumental biography of Stonewall Jackson. Professor Luvaas moved from Allegheny College to the U.S. Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, PA. Signed or inscribed copies of his works are increasingly scarce.
