Zustand: Good. - Closely written 4-page letter penned in black ink & filling both sides of 2 sheets of cream paper, each approximately 7-1/4 inches high by 5-1/4 inches wide. Signed "George Lunt". 2 small holes in the upper section of each page just graze a few letters of the text without rendering them illegible. There is a short tear & a few tiny tears to the edges of the letter at the folds. Folded 4 times for mailing. Good. Lunt writes to American author William Winter. He alludes to various literary matters, including his own new book ["Origin of the Late War"] and a book of poems which he says he will be happy to review. He recommends that Winter should make a point of meeting a leading lawyer from Vermont , "a young man of very superior abilities & qualities" who works in the same building as Winter. He also refers to the fact that both he and Winter have seamen among their ancestors.George Lunt [1803-1885] was an American editor, lawyer, author and politician. Before and during the Civil War he was editor of the Boston Courier together with George S. Hillard. He opposed the estrangement of the South and defended slavery.William Winter [1836-1917] is best remembered as a drama critic and biographer of theatrical personalities. He was a contributor to "The Galaxy: A Fortnightly Illustrated Magazine" published at 39 Park Row, New York City. Lunt refers to this address in his letter as the building where both Winter and the young Vermont lawyer have their offices.

Periodical. Zustand: Good. 4 pages. One approximately 17 inch by 11 inch sheet printed on both sides and folded to create a 4 page periodical. The Data Security Letter was published 9 times a year. It's purpose was to help data security professionals by providing inside information and knowledgeable analysis of developments in computer and communications security. This special issue was, in part, a solicitation for subscriptions. This is a rare surviving piece of data security/computer security ephemera/technical literature associated with one of the pioneers in computer security who rose to prominence in the last quarter of the 20th century. She was a pioneer by any measure, but it is noteworthy that she was one of the early female cyber security experts to gain recognition in this emerging field. Teresa Lunt has an M.A. in applied mathematics from Indiana University and an A.B. in geophysics from Princeton. She was a computer security pioneer. In an interview related to work supported by the National Science Foundation, "Building an Infrastructure for Computer Security History," she discussed her work in the computer security field at MITRE Corporation, SRI International, DARPA, and PARC. At SRI she was a principal research scientist on IDES, the first meaningful intrusion detection expert system. Her work at SRI was pioneering a highly secure database system (research initially launched by Dorothy Denning), as well as her work at DARPA's Information Technology Office where she started research programs in computer and network security. Lunt was the vice president and director of the Computing Science Laboratory at Xerox PARC. Her publications include information assurance, security in object-oriented systems, automated audit trail analysis, and software security modeling. Presumed First Edition, First printing this special issue.

Zustand des Schutzumschlags: dj. First Thus. Octavo. 23.5cm. Publisher's orange cloth boards, titled in black to spine. Dustjacket. 187pp. Strong and tight, but visibly sunned to spine and edges of binding, and a little bumped to the head of the spine. The priceclipped dustjacket is similarly sunned to the spine, and has some light marginal wear, but shows very well. A very good, presentable copy. Internally clean, with some annotation and emphasis to the text from an informed reader, presumably Angus Thurmer. There is a 2 page letter from Major General Lunt, dated January 1971 on Ministry of Defense notepaper, to Angus Thurmer at the US Embassy in New Delhi, discussing the book and the editing work and apprising Mr. Thurmer of his current status. Major General Lunt CBE had a prominent and successful career in the British Military, spending a significant part of his career in India, including a stint as Military Adviser to the High Commission, there is a note on the title page to the effect that the book's attentive reader played Polo with Lunt whilst he was stationed in Delhi. The first edition of "From Sepoy to Subedar" was published in 1873, then languished forgotten for almost a century until Major General Lunt, in his role as accomplished "Old India Hand" decided a new edition was called for. Primary source material for the period from native Indians, is relatively thin on the ground, spanning as it does Subedar Ram's memories of the Afghan Wars (the first two), the retreat from Khabul, the subsequent trials and tribulations of a soldier's life, and the post-"mutiny" changes to the leadership and administration of India and how badly that went. A fascinating account, which should be ranked alongside "Confessions of a Thug", and Lady Florentia Sale's Journal as insights (with all faults) into the nature of life in and under the British Raj.
