Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The use of antibiotics in the treatment by antibacterial and antifungal chemo therapy, has become standard practice since the end of World War Two and has had an enormous impact on healthcare throughout the world. Compounds belonging to this class have also reached an important place in the medical treatment of human cancer. Although, the discovery of most of these agents came from more or less sophisticated screening programs of soil microrganisms, many of the important antibiotics used today in clinical practice are derived from the original biosynthetic products by the application of often novel and generally elaborated chemical synthetic methodologies. In fact the antibiotics have represented (and still represent) for a generation of organic chemists an endless source of molecular structures whose varied assemblage of carbon atom backbones and chemical functions was beyond any possibility of imagination. Perhaps a similar repertoire of chemotypes was formerly offered by the natural products, namely the alkaloids, the terpenes, the vitamins and hormones as well as the pigments of the animal and plant kingdoms, albeit the chemical arrange ments of the antibiotic molecules appeared much more surprising and diverse to the admiring eyes of cultivated organic chemists. The idea of this book, certainly a landmark in the field, came during the Symposium of EUCHEM on Chemical Synthesis of Antibiotics, that was held at Aussois in Savoy, France (May 2-6, 1988), the initiative being taken by Gabor Lukacs to whom Masaji Ohno readily associated as a co-editor.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The 1st Euchem Symposium on the Chemical Synthesis of Antibiotics was held in Aussois in Savoie, France on May 2-6, 1988 thanks to the efforts of Prof. G. Lukacs, chairperson, and Prof. F. Arcamone and Prof. P. Welzel, vice-chairpersons of the International Organizing Committee. Following the great success of the Ist Symposium, the 2nd Symposium, which was chaired by Prof. Ohno, was held in Oiso, Japan in 1990. The 3rd Symposium, chaired by Prof. K. Krohn, was held in Kloster Banz, Germany in 1992. It has been decided that the 4th Symposium will take place in the United States in 1994 and be chaired by Dr. H. A. Kirst of Lilly Research Laboratories. The Euchem Symposium has come to serve as an important symposium where one can understand the development and the future directions of the chemical synthesis of antibiotics and other bioactive metabolites from microorganisms. Prof. G. Lukacs, in cooperation with Prof. M. Ohno, edited the book 'Recent Progress in the Chemical Synthesis of Antibiotics' three years ago. Most of its contributors were the participants of the Aussois Symposium. This book attracted the attention of researchers specializing in organic synthesis and stimulated considerable progress in this field.

Appendix: The Chinese Chronology of the Most Important Dynasties; Notes Related to the Text; Selected Bibliography; Index "Identified as a work of the Spring and Autumn Period (770 B.C. - 446 B.C.), Wu Shi Er Bing Fang or Prescriptions for Fifty Two Diseases, a silk scroll unearthed at the n°3 Mawangdui Han Tomb in Changsha, Hunan Province in 1973, is the earliest extant medical document in China. Most of the diseases it records are external diseases, such as infection, trauma, frostbite, insect bites, anal fistula, tumours, and skin diseases such as abscesses and warts, etc. Treatments recorded in the document are also varied from oral administration to various external treatments such as fumigation or steaming, ironing, acupuncture, moxibustion, Chinese massage, cupping, etc. The principle of Pattern Identification and Treatment had been roughly applied for treating Ju or Deep -Rooted Ulcers, where the prescription was tailored for different patterns. For example, ,"Ju is treated with seven medicinal substances: Radix Ampelopsis, Radix Astragali, Peony, Cinnamon, Ginger, Pepper, and Dogwood. Double Radix Ampelopsis for Bone Ju, double Radix Astragali for Flesh Ju, double Peony for Kidney Ju, and each dosage for each of the other six. Then put a pinch [of the prescription] into a cup of wine, and then drink it five to six times a day." That is to say, Deep-Rooted Ulcers were generally treated with the seven medicinals, but patterns had to be identified first, and then dosages differed according to different patterns and symptoms. Such records have shown the high level of expertise of Chinese External Medicine in the past centuries." Lan Fengli.
