Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Small folio (bound in twos), the binding 12-1/4 x 8-3/4 in. (312 x 222 mm), the pages 12 x 8-3/8 in. (304 x 213 mm). 50 leaves with hand-painted portraits engraved by Luigi Ceroni after Jean Petitot (varying to 64 mm in height), comprising frontispiece portrait of Petitot, manuscript title with portrait of Mlle Dupré and 48 additional portraits of personages of the era of Louis XIV, before all letters and without printed text, on chine laid within blind panels onto thick, stiff papier vélin interleaved with tissue, with light pencil inscriptions of subjects' identities at foot of each page (except Mlle Dupré underneath her portrait). Full red levant morocco with matching doublures, the covers, cover edges and doublures gilt-tooled in retrospective 17th-c. panel design, spine gilt-tooled in six compartments with raised bands framed in blind, red and gold silk caps, ivory watered silk endpapers, all edges gilt, by The French Binders, Garden City, N.Y., its gilt stamp at bottom center of front doublure, in a later full antique rose calf clamshell box with complementary gilt tooling. Collates [1 l. (free endpaper)], [8 ll. (blanks)], 1 l. (frontispiece portrait recto of Petitot), 1 l. (title recto with portrait of Mlle Dupré), [2 ll. (blanks)], 48 ll. additional portrait plates rectos, [9 ll. (blanks)], [1 l. (free endpaper)], all the plates preceded by full-page tissue leaves, with two additional tissue leaves between last plate and terminal blanks. Overall fine, upper cover with two areas, 30mm and 25 mm, of mild spotting, joints lightly rubbed, box mildly scuffed, 15 mm splash of mild foxing in outer margin of 32nd portrait leaf (Tourville), handful of isolated small, unobtrusive fox marks here and there in margins of other leaves (the chine untouched and the papier vélin glowing). These portraits were issued in parts with biographies and published as Les Émaux de Petitot du Musée impérial du Louvre: portraits de personnages historiques and de femmes célèbres du siècle de Louis XIV, gravés au burin par M. L. Ceroni (Paris: B. Blaisot, libraire-éditeur, md d estampes, 2 vols., 1862-1864). Vicaire states that a first printing of 100 sets was made with artist's proofs of the engravings on chine and papier blanc before letters (the sets on chine dearer and presumably fewer than those on wove paper). No other set of hand-painted artist's proofs has been located. The Fleming set, sold Christie's, November 18, 1988 (lot 275), comprising the two printed volumes extended to five with proof states of the engravings in black and bistre, is the only copy with proof states to appear in recent public auction databases. Petitot, leading miniaturist of the day and peintre en émail du Roi, was also a favorite of the Stuart Court in England. The exquisite hand-painting of these miniature oval engravings captures fabric, jewelry and background detail with particular delicacy. The exceptional binding by The French Binders derives from the period from 1918 when Henri Hardy and Léon Maillard continued, with Hardy's brother-in-law Gaston Pilon, their association begun at The Club Bindery under the auspices of elders of the early Grolier Club.
