Lugol führte die Jodtherapie für diese Krankheit, wie überhaupt in die ärztliche Praxis ein. - Zu Beginn und am Schluß etwas stockfleckig, insgesamt jedoch gut erhalten.

Die Lithographie zeigt Lugol als Halbfigur im Dreiviertelprofil, mit dicht gelocktem Haar und voluminösem Mantel, der den Oberkörper plastisch rahmt. Der weich schraffierte Hintergrund lässt Kopf und Brustpartie klar hervortreten; die bürgerliche Kleidung ohne ärztliche Attribute lenkt die Aufmerksamkeit auf die charakteristische Physiognomie. Die Kombination aus schlicht gesetztem Namen "Lugol" und groß ausgeführter facsimilierter Unterschrift erhöht den Charakter des autorisierten Gelehrtenbildnisses und ordnet das Blatt in die französische Porträt-Lithographie der 1830er/1840er Jahre ein. Jean Guillaume Auguste Lugol (18.08.1786 Montauban - 16.09.1851 Neuilly-sur-Seine), französischer Internist, Spezialist für skrofulöse Erkrankungen und Pionier der Iodtherapie, studierte Medizin in Paris, wurde 1812 Arzt am Hôpital Saint-Louis, 1816 Médecin ordinaire und 1835 Médecin en chef desselben Hospitals. Er spezialisierte sich auf skrofulöse Lymphknotenerkrankungen und Tuberkulose und führte ab den 1820er Jahren die systematische Anwendung von Jodpräparaten ein; seine "Solution iodée" (Lugolsche Lösung, wässrige Iod-Kaliumiodid-Lösung) wurde 1829 in einer Monographie beschrieben und fand rasch internationale Verbreitung. In seinen Schriften, darunter "Mémoire sur l'emploi de l'iode dans le traitement des engorgements scrofuleux" (1829) und "Traité pratique sur les scrofules et les affections scrofuleuses" (1830), verband er klinische Beobachtung mit pathologisch-anatomischen Befunden und begründete damit seinen Ruf als Autorität für skrofulöse Krankheiten. In der medizinhistorischen Literatur gilt Lugol als einer der wichtigsten Vertreter der frühen Jod-Therapie und als Namensgeber der Lugolschen Lösung, die bis in die Gegenwart in Diagnostik und Therapie (z.B.
