The contents include History of Small Firearms, Muskets and Rifles, Pistols, Derringers, Pepperboxes, Percussion Revolvers, Metal Cartridge Revolvers, Assessories and Oddities, and has an Appendix of Museums and Collections. Hank Wieand Bowman was an author, photographer, and sportsman who wrote for "men's magazines" in the 1950s and early 1960s. Hank died in an offshore power boat racing accident in the early 1960s. He authored many books and articles on firearms, recreational boating and other subjects. Lucian Cary was a journalist, novelist, editor and frequent contributor to such diverse publications as The Saturday Evening Post , Collier's and True Magazine (as a special editor of firearms articles). Mr. Cary began his career as a reporter for The Chicago Tribune in 1910. He was literary editor of The Chicago Evening Post from 1913 to 1914, and then acting editor of The Dial, a Chicago literary journal. He went to Collier's in 1916 and contributed to that weekly and to The Saturday Evening Post for many years, about 60 stories in all, plus novels and motion picture work. An antique firearm is a term used to describe a firearm that was designed and manufactured prior to the beginning of the 20th century. Although the exact definition of what constitutes an "antique firearm" varies between countries, the advent of smokeless powder or the start of the Boer War are often used as cut-off dates. Antique firearms are usually collected because of their historical interest and/or their monetary value. Antique firearms can be divided into two basic types: muzzle-loading and cartridge firing. Muzzleloading antique firearms are not generally owned with the intent of firing them (although original muzzleloaders can be safely fired, after having them thoroughly inspected), but instead are usually owned as display pieces or for their historic value. Cartridge-firing antique firearms are more commonly encountered as shooting pieces, but most antiques made from the 1860s through the 1880s were made with relatively mild steel and were designed to use black powder. They were limited to low bullet velocities and had heavily arcing "rainbow" bullet trajectories. However, advances in steel metallurgy and the advent of mass-produced smokeless powder in the early 1890s gave cartridge rifles of this new era much higher velocities and much flatter trajectories than their predecessors. These advances, typified by cartridges such as 8×50mmR Lebel, 7×57mm Mauser, .303 British, and 7.62×54mmR made many smokeless powder rifles manufactured in the 1890s capable of accurate shooting at long distances. Many antique smokeless powder cartridge firearms from the 1880s and 1890s can still compete satisfactorily in target shooting events alongside their modern counterparts. Originally published serially in The Saturday Evening Post (August 4 - September 8, 1928), the yarn was filmed by M-G-M with William Haines and Joan Crawford; the movie (an early talkie) was released in April 1929, more or less concurrently with the appearance of the hardcover edition from Doubleday, Doran (which, somewhat weirdly, was put out as a regular novel rather than as any kind of photoplay edition or other direct tie-in with the film).
