The Pharsalia is a Roman epic poem written by the poet Lucan (39 AD - 65 AD), detailing the civil war between Julius Caesar and the forces of the Roman Senate led by Pompey the Great…. The poem's title is a reference to the Battle of Pharsalus, which occurred in 48 BC, near Pharsalus, Thessaly, in northern Greece. With the text in Latin, this is the Oudendorp edition with Thomas May's continuation. The book is bound in later (probably late 20th century) brown cloth covered boards with gold titling on a leather label on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with very slight fading to the spine. The contents are tight and clean with some light foxing on the half-title and last page of the book.

An attractive copy of Lucan's "Pharsalia", one of the greatest epics of antiquity, written in fine Humanistic script and illustrated with coloured topographic diagrams. - The stoic poet Lucan (AD 39-65) was born in Cordoba, Spain, and educated in Rome and Athens. Generally known as "Pharsalia", his magnum opus is an epic based on the civil war between Julius Caesar and Pompey, analysing the causes of the war, Caesar's actions in Egypt (including his affair with Cleopatra), and the relation with the Senate. "ThePharsaliais the greatest Latin epic after theAeneid, and Lucan's brilliant style won him the admiration of his contemporaries" (Oxford Companion to Classical Literature). - The text commences "Mannæi Lucani Civilis belli sive Pharsaliæ Liber primus incipit. Bella per Emathios plus quam civilia campos [.] tui natura relinquet", fol. 1r/v (17th century); "Quis deus esse velis [.] Obsedit muris calcantem mnia Magnum. Finis. Deo Gratias Amen", ff. 2-160. Most of the text on the last page is obscured by pasted-on strips of paper, leaving just four lines and a date visible. - A diagram of the port of Brindisi, headed "Topographia", with captions "Insula", "Portus", "Lingua", "Insula", "Brondusium", and "Latus hesperie", fol. 23v; a city, fol. 53v; a diagram headed "Topographia", in the form of five mountains around a circle, with captions "Ossa", "Pelion", "Otris", "Pindus", and "Olympus", in the middle a caption "Emathia" and a note "Ibi facta fuerunt maxima bella civilia inter Cæsarem et Pompeum Magnum", fol. 73; a T-O-map of the world with continents labelled "Asia", "Europa", and "Affrica", fol. 118v. - Marginal thumbing and light damp staining; fol. 1 and part of fol. 39 are 17th century replacements; last page partly obscured by pasted paper strips; edges of binding a little rubbed.
