A complicated property dispute in Cumberland, fuelled by political enmity. Portland took out a case against Lowther and the Corporation of Carlisle accusing them of compromising his interests in the fishing grounds leased to the defendants. Portland lost and a pamplet war ensued.

Zustand: VG. Piece of parchment paper, 15 x 9-1/3 inches, folded in half. Mounted on left side is 3" oval engraved portrait of Lord Viscount Melville and his signautre is mounted on righthand panel. Beneath the portrait and the signature are 20 lines of neat ink writing (in someone else's hand) dated 1806 telling a bit about Lord Melville, major events in his life, his personality and 4 lines of poetry by William Hutton . VG.
