Summary: As in his previous book, "Tarnished Eagles", Thomas Lowry - this time with Jack Welsh - brings to light the various misdeeds of Union officers. In this new book, the authors examine the relationship between the principles of the medical profession and the often Bzantine regulations of the army. As a result, the courts-martial in this book primarily fall into two categories: failure to practice proper medicine and failure to follow the procedures and administrative rules that govern army life, with some overlap. As usual, Lowry peppers many of these accounts with his dry wit, but he also offers penetrating analyses of the problems faced by many of these doctors, who often were forced to work under intolerable conditions. 1 Kg.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Civil War soldiers faced many threats: bullets, cannon balls, bayonets, scurvy, dysentery, malaria, mumps, and measles. Yet, Robert E. Lee's immortal Army of Northern Virginia lost 70,000 men to an invisible threat, one not understood until forty years after the guns fell silent. That menace was hookworm, which bled the Deep South dry, not just during the war but for generations before and after. Now for the first time, a book-length exploration of this menace clearly shows its effects not just in the American South but throughout the world. Full justice is done to the Hookworm Heroes who raised half the country from being enfeebled 'poor white trash,' to the productive and healthy men and women of the South today. A biologist's view of Pickett's Charge casts a whole new light on both commanders and the men who faced the Union guns, opening a window of knowledge to both Civil War buffs and general readers. Twenty-four photographs. Fully indexed.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A young Confederate soldier from sunny Virginia found himself shivering in a Dakota blizzard, while scurvy rotted his teeth. What was he doing there and why The answer lies in the 300 Virginia soldiers who 'galvanized' into the Union army. These were men from Union prisoner of war camps who enlisted in the United State Volunteers and were sent west to fight Indians. Why 'galvanized ' An iron bucket coated with zinc is said to be 'galvanized,' but it is still an iron bucket; thusly a Confederate clad in Union blue is still a Confederate, hence the slang term of the 1860s, a 'galvanized Yankee.' Over 3,000 Confederate POWs volunteered to shed their prisoners' rags, get new uniforms, pick up new muskets, and travel as far west as New Mexico and Utah, to guard the stage coach and telegraph lines, the only links between the east and west coasts. This first-ever study of Virginia galvanized men begins with a geography of western roads, rivers, and boundaries, and the horrible deaths from malnutrition, disease, and scalping. The author fully probes the cruel and intentional camp starvation promoted by one Union colonel. The book concludes with a complete roster of every soldier, including Confederate service, camp experience, Union service, post-war pensions, and, in most cases, burial plot location, tombstone description, and widow information.…
