First and only edition of this important narrative, skilfully edited from Abbot's papers. Uncommon, just seven copies listed on Library Hub. Abbott (1804-1867) was the eldest of five brothers, four of whom served in India. He was educated Winchester and Addiscombe, commissioned as 2nd lieutenant in 1819 and posted to the Bengal Artillery. "His first active service was at the fort of Bakhara in Malwa in December 1822. At the siege of Bharatpur in December 1825 and January 1826 he successfully commanded a small battery and gained the favourable notice of Lord Combermere, the commander-in-chief, who in October 1827 appointed him adjutant of the Karnal division of artillery. In 1833-4 he served against the forts of Shekawati, returning afterwards to Karnal. He was promoted brevet captain in April 1834 and captain in May 1835" (ODNB). During the war he commanded a battery in the capture of Ghazni; was present during the occupation of Kabul; in command of the artillery in the defence of Jalalabad, where "he mounted guns on the defences, constructed carriages for captured ordnance, and, short of ammunition, improvised 'pebble-grape' from stones. Apparently 'the life and soul of the garrison in their worst times', he helped to maintain morale. His artillery supported several successful sorties", "playing a major role" when the garrison finally sallied out and defeated their besiegers. Abbott joined Field-Marshall (then, Major-General) George Pollock's force, accompanying Monteath's punitive column against the Shinwaris, his guns being decisive at Mazina. He again distinguished himself in actions in August and early September and at the battles of Tezin, and the Haft Kotal when Akbar Khan was finally defeated. Pollock described Abbott as "the finest artillery officer in India" (p. 54). He was subsequently Primary Commissary of Ordnance, 1847-55, and 1855-8 Inspector-General of Ordnance and Magazines, Bengal. In 1859 he returned to England due to ill health, and died at Cheltenham in 1867.
