Hardcover. Zustand: Good. No Jacket. Mathematics: A Text-Book for Technical Students by Bevis Brunel Low, M.A. (Cantab.), M.I.Mech.E. A substantial early twentieth-century technical mathematics textbook published by Longmans, Green and Co., London, New York & Toronto. Written for engineering and technical college students, this comprehensive work covers the mathematical principles essential to mechanical engineering, construction, technical drawing and industrial design. It contains 409 illustrations, 761 exercises, and numerous worked examples, providing a detailed insight into the rigorous mathematical training required before the age of calculators and computers. Bevis Brunel Low was a lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at the Military College of Science and editor of the respected Pocket-Book for Mechanical Engineers, making this an authoritative educational text from one of the period's leading engineering educators. The numerous diagrams and practical examples remain an excellent record of historical engineering education and are of interest to collectors of mathematics, engineering and industrial history. Bound in the original blue-green cloth with gilt lettering to the spine, the volume has an attractive utilitarian appearance typical of technical books of the era. It displays well as both a reference work and a decorative piece for an academic library, engineering office or industrial-themed collection. Condition is Good. The original cloth binding shows fading, particularly to the spine, together with rubbing, general shelf wear and fraying to the head and foot of the spine. The binding remains firm and sound. Internally the pages are clean with light age toning throughout. The endpapers show light foxing and minor handling marks, but the text and illustrations remain clear and easily readable. A desirable copy for collectors of vintage mathematics, engineering history, scientific textbooks, Longmans publications, industrial heritage, and early twentieth-century educational works. It also makes an excellent reference volume for those interested in the history of technical education and mechanical engineering. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Advanced ceramics and composite materials are increasingly being utilized as components in batteries, fuel cells, sensors, high-temperature electronics, membranes, and high-end biomedical devices, in addition to their traditional use in seals, valves, implants, and high-temperature and wear components. In recent years, there has been substantial progress in the use of ceramic-matrix composites (CMCs), with new applications developing continually.Advances in Ceramic-Matrix Composites, Third Edition, delivers an innovative approach focusing on the very latest advances, materials developments, and new applications. These include new technologies that have emerged, such as additive manufacturing of ceramic-matrix composites (CMCs), the design of CMCs based on MAX-phase and ultrahigh-temperature ceramics (UHTCs), and the reinforcement of CMCs with graphene nanoplatelets. Similarly, new applications for CMCs have emerged for enhanced electromagnetic absorption and ionizing radiation shielding. The specialized information contained in this book will be highly valuable for researchers and postgraduate students working in ceramic science, engineering, and ceramic composites technology and engineers and scientists in aerospace, energy, building and construction, biomedical, and automotive industries. …

First edition, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper "B. V. Slater, with the best regards of N. I. Low, London 7/12/56". Published shortly after the Second World War, this work records experiences of Singapore under the Japanese occupation, including daily life during the war, guerrilla resistance, collaboration and survival under the Japanese administration, and the aftermath of liberation. The book preserves a number of contemporary accounts from wartime Singapore, including the return of women forcibly sent to Japanese military "comfort stations" in Indonesia. The subtitle, (Our City of Dreadful Nights), echoes Rudyard Kipling's The City of Dreadful Night (1888). B. V. Slater was a classicist who edited the Oxford Latin Dictionary in 1947-49. Small octavo. With 4 halftone plates. Original light blue boards, front board lettered in black. Numbered in manuscript on front free endpaper. Binding extremities toned, spine lightly worn, light damp stains to front board and head of a few leaves, book block shaken. A very good copy.…
