In den Warenkorb8vo, pp. [iii]-xvi, 200; bound without the half title in contemporary tree calf, somewhat worn, but sound, with gilt title label on spine. First edition: this posthumous collection seems to be the only separate publication of the unusually-named Lovibond (1724-75), who contributed to Edward Moore's The World along with Walpole and Chesterfield. DNB says that Lovibond's Poems were published 'under the superintendence' of his brother, Anthony Lovibond Collins, but the preface makes it clear that he in fact only collected the pieces, and put them into the hands of another. The actual editor was George Keate, who included in error two poems by George Steevens ironically enough, one of them was 'Julia's printed letter' (pp. 19-35), which DNB singles out. Another poem, 'The Mulberry Tree' (pp. 130-5) contrasts with some skill the different characters of Samuel Johnson and David Garrick: it is noted by Boswell in his biography (Hill-Powell, I p. 101). Lovibond's father was a director of the East India Company, and left him with enough money not to have to work. He lived at Hampton, and was acquainted with Horace Walpole, who bought pictures at the sale of his possessions after his death in 1775. A few copies have a portrait frontispiece of Lovibond's wife, but it is said that only 25 copies were printed, so it is not required in the book. Provenance. 19th century bookplate of Lord Carlingford (1823-98), politician and book collector he was a member of the Philobiblon Club and, incidentally, inherited Horace Walpole's Strawberry Hill from his wife, Countess Waldegrave.
