Edizione originale non datata, ma ascrivibile al 1863, di questo resoconto di viaggio dell'Autrice,ÂLouiseÂVallory (qui si firma con il suo cognome, mentre il cognome del marito era Mesnier) in terra d'Algeria. "The words ofÂLouise Vallory, a French woman who visited Algeria in 1862, are therefore crucial for establishing a European woman's perspective regarding her colonial counterpart. On observing what she could of the everyday life of an Algerian, Vallory wrote 'She does not leave [the house / the harem] alone, probably; she does not have permission to raise her veil in the streets, to show her face to a stranger'.ÂVallory, as a European visitor and a woman, had a certain freedom and viewpoint. In relation to the harem woman, she had a colonial gaze that allowed her to notice theÂabsolute effacement and otherness of the Algerian woman out in public, who is set apart from women like Vallory and from men because she is accompanied and because she is veiled" (M.
