Neither do these bold, commercial sign-boards fall into the category of 'tourist art'. Rather, this is the art of painters with little or no formal artistic education. It is graphic, extroverted, street art used to advertise and entice. In Nairobi, Kenya, such street art is found in the poorest, working-class neighbourhoods, around River Road and the Mathare Valley area. It is made by people who would not consider themselves to be artists in any Western sense of the word, but who design and paint boards as a way to earn money to survive. During the past thirty years, commercial visual imagery has developed into one of Africa's most vibrant and multi-faceted art traditions. It has been variously termed 'urban art', 'popular art', 'sign-painter's art' and has even been dubbed 'African Pop Art'. Sign-paintings vary enormously from the small A5-size hairstyle designs to elaborate multi-coloured murals which cover the walls of city bars and restaurants.
