Black letters and an illustration on red cloth. 96 pages; 4 color plates. The spine's staples have turned the cloth black above them; the cloth is split above two of the staples on the front side. The top end of the text block has shelf wear soiling. The foredge has a linear, intermittent 1 1/4 in. stain. The front FEP has an owner's name and date of 1939. The back pastedown has light foxing. DJ: 50c publisher's price; decorated with a myriad of multi-colored circles; 9 chips, 1/8 in. to 1/2 in.; folds and bottom end of spine panel are rubbed; a crease line is along the top edge of the back panel. Zustand: VERY GOOD. First or early American edition. A late novel by this prolific author who wrote using the pseudonym Ouida, and who is best known for the classic story 'A Dog of Flanders.' This follows the life and loves of a young aristocrat named Guilderoy, his journey from his privileged upbringing in England, through his travels across Europe and his involvement in a complicated love triangle. Oscar Wilde's review commented "Guilderoy, with all its faults, which are great, and its absurdities, which are greater, is a book to be read" and he also quoted several epigrams from it - among them "Moralists say that a soul should resist passion. They might as well say that a house should resist an earthquake." Lovell's library, no. 1353400 pp. Good condition in embossed brown cloth with gilt title panel on spine.
