Guter Zustand. - Die multiple Sklerose (MS), auch als Encephalomyelitis disseminata (ED) bezeichnet, ist eine chronisch-entzündliche Erkrankung, bei der die Markscheiden (= Myelinscheiden = elektrisch isolierende äußere Schicht der Nervenfasern) im zentralen Nervensystem (ZNS) angegriffen sind. Die Ursache dieser sog. Entmarkungserkrankung ist trotz großer Forschungsanstrengungen noch nicht geklärt. Sie ist neben der Epilepsie eine der häufigsten neurologischen Krankheiten bei jungen Erwachsenen und von erheblicher sozialmedizinischer Bedeutung. Bei der multiplen Sklerose entstehen in der weißen Substanz von Gehirn und Rückenmark verstreut vielfache (multiple) entzündliche Entmarkungsherde, die vermutlich durch den Angriff körpereigener Abwehrzellen auf die Myelinscheiden der Nervenzellfortsätze verursacht werden. Da die Entmarkungsherde im gesamten ZNS auftreten können, kann die multiple Sklerose fast jedes neurologische Symptom verursachen. Sehstörungen mit Minderung der Sehschärfe und Störungen der Augenbewegung (internukleäre Ophthalmoplegie) sind typisch, aber nicht spezifisch für die multiple Sklerose. Der Schweregrad der Behinderungen des Patienten wird häufig anhand einer Skala (EDSS) angegeben. Die Krankheit ist nicht heilbar, jedoch kann der Verlauf durch verschiedene Maßnahmen oft günstig beeinflusst werden. Entgegen der landläufigen Meinung führt die multiple Sklerose nicht zwangsläufig zu schweren Behinderungen.
