Cours de Géométrie certainement donné par Louis Genty, qui est alors professeur de Mathématiques à l'Ecole centrale du Loiret à Orléans. Louis Genty s'est fait connaitre dans ce domaine pour avoir écrit un livre sur les apports de Fermat à la géométrie et il deviendra correspondant de l'Académie des Sciences section géométrie peu avant sa mort en 1817. Geometry course certainly given by Louis Genty, who was then professor of Mathematics at the Ecole centrale du Loiret in Orléans. Louis Genty became known in his field for having written a book on Fermat's contributions to geometry and he became a correspondent for the Académie des Sciences in the geometry section shortly before his death in 1817. In-8 de vii, (1), 144 pages ; basane marbrée de l'époque, dos lisse orné, pièce de titre de maroquin bordeaux en long (reliure usée avec coiffes absentes, charnières fendues, petits manques de cuir par endroits, coins fortement émoussés). Première édition de cet éloge de Fermat, qui met en lumière l'importance de ses contributions aux mathématiques, en particulier dans le domaine du calcul différentiel. L'ouvrage répond à une question posée par l'Académie des sciences inscriptions et belles lettres de Toulouse qui, jugeant que le génie de l'illustre mathématicien Pierre de Fermat (ca 1600-1665) n'était pas assez apprécié, proposa d'en déterminer l'influence sur son siècle. Le prix fut accordé en 1783 à l'abbé Louis Genty (1743-1817), mathématicien et proviseur du collège royal d'Orléans, dont le travail constitue un jalon majeur dans la reconnaissance de l'importance de l'uvre mathématique de Fermat. D'Alembert, le premier, avait déclaré, dans l'Encyclopédie, qu'on devait à Fermat « la première application du calcul aux quantités différentielles pour trouver les tangentes ». L'abbé Genty démontra ensuite avec succès qu'il devait être regardé comme le premier inventeur du calcul infinitésimal, avant Newton et Leibniz, ce qui fut confirmé par Lagrange dans ses Leçons sur le calcul des fonctions (1801), et Laplace dans son Essai philosophique sur le calcul des probabilités (1814). …
