The odd faint mark to reverse of Swinthinbank wrapper, and a couple of minor marks and spots to extremities of Anson and Crawford fly leaves. Account of the first expedition to winter in Antarctica; 'a gem in the Antarctic literat…ure' (Rosove). Bernacchi's account of Borchgrevink's Southern Cross expedition to Cape Adare includes scientific results as well as a narrative noted for its literary merit. 'The original cloth binding of this first issue is quite friable, with the result that few copies survive in truly fine condition. Apparently, the fault was soon noticed, as a second issue was produced that year bound in a more durable red cloth' (Taurus). Taurus 25; Rosove 35.A1.
