In den WarenkorbCloth. Zustand: Poor. None (illustrator). First edition. Three scarce works bound together regarding the Corn Laws, arguing that the legislation caused problems for tenant farmers and farm labourers. The Corn Laws imposed tariffs and trade restrictions on imported food and corn in the United Kingdom between 1815 and 1846. These laws raised food prices and the costs of living for the British public. Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel repealed the Corn Laws in 1846.The first of the works in this collection consists of 'Extracts from the Works of Col. T. Perronet Thompson', who authored 'Catechism on the Corn Law'.In 1842, the Anti-Corn Law League offered a prize for the best essay on 'Agriculture and the Corn Law'. Present in this volume are the three prize essays of George Hope, Arthur Morse, and W. Greg. Each essay argues why the Corn Laws are detrimental to tenant farmers and farm labourers. The final work is 'Selections from Mrs. Loudon's Philanthropic Economy', and consists of the discussion of corn laws in her 'Philanthropic Economy, or the Philosophy of Happiness'. In a contemporary cloth binding. Bumping to back strip head and tail, with fraying to back strip head and tail, and small hole in cloth to centre of front joint. Internally, text block detached from binding, and separated in two locations. Binding otherwise strained. Pages age toned, with light handling marks. Poor. book.
