'There have been many freaks in the history of literature but none more astonishing than Amanda Ros, who was described by Aldous Huxley as 'an Elizabethan born out of her time''. With a frontispiece. In a pink cloth binding in original clipped dustwrapper. Externally, in lovely condition. Dustwrapper is excellent with just some minor edgewear and slight fading to spine. Internally, firmly bound. Full-page engraving 23.5 x 33.6 cm (including caption) on a single newspaper leaf, relevant text on the verso, edge tears (no loss) and creasing, in very good condition. Dramatic and scarce engraving depicting the destruction of the Canton Factories, principal site of Western trade with China, at the onset of the Second Opium War, (1856-1860) by a 25 year old Gustave Doré. He contributed to the "Illustrated Times", a chief rival to the monopoly of "The Illustrated London News". Whilst the self-taught Doré did not enjoy initial success in France, for Victorian Britons Doré's art was celebrated, producing (with Blanchard Jerrold) his landmark account of mid Victorian London "London: a pilgrimage" over four years (1869-1872). From the Estate of the late collector and scholar Arthur Hacker.

Isaac Newton is the author of the Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica, in which he described universal gravitation with his law of gravitation and formulated the laws of motion, thereby laying the foundation for classical mechanics.

Panoramic Print. Zustand: Very good condition. First printing. A very detailed birdseye view of London, drawn by Thomas Sulman engraved by Robert Loudan. Possibly viewed from a hot air balloon above Kennington, depicts the Thames from the Houses of Parliament to St. Katherine's Dock. North of the river landmarks include Buckingham Palace, Hyde Park Corner, the Clock Tower of Big Ben, Trafalgar Square, St. Paul's Cathedral, Monument and the Tower of London, with Regent's Park, Hampstead and Highgate. On the south side of the Thames are Lambeth Palace, Waterloo Station, St. George's Circus and Elephant & Castle. Wood cut engraving, original folds. Folding copy as published, some foxing in upper left margin, otherwise very clean. Image size: 520 x 1330mm, 20.5 x 52.25".
