He finds that de Winton's 'last letter certainly makes a very considerable difference', but 'the obvious answer' to his mind is, as de Winton only proposes 'to reduce the York House from 112 to 110, it is hardly worth stirring up the waters at all. And especially so, as the population is increasing so rapidly that the next Census will probably alter the whole state of things.'.

Lady Salisbury is referred to in her husband's entry in the Oxford DNB as 'a buoyant and forceful woman who could share his intellectual interests and encourage and facilitate his career'. 3pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded twice for postage. Written in a good firm hand. Addressed to 'Dear Miss Faithfull' and signed 'G Salisbury'. Begins: 'I am afraid the Prime Minister has nothing to do with the coinage & should advize [sic] Mr Faithfull Begg to lay his suggestions before Mr Goschen [Salisbury's Chancellor of the Exchequer between 1887 and 1892] in whose department I fancy the matter lies'. She thanks her for sending 'the interesting extract on Mr Balfour', finding it 'pleasant to think that hard work is still appreciated in England'.

A fine original colour lithograph from Vanity Fair, a magazine which was published from 1869-1914, featuring a large caricature portrait each week. These were drawn by various artists, the most famous of whom was Leslie Ward who used the 'nom de crayon' of "Spy". This portrait will come mounted/matted and ready to frame using archivist quality materials, mount size 18 x 12 inches, 47 x 31 cms. It will be presented in a cellophane wrapper with our label guaranteeing authenticity. We pack very well, between sheets of hardboard. Rebound in modern blue cloth over boards with "Sermon" and "Bishop of Salisbury" gilded on he front. Binding is in As New condition. New pastedowns and endpapers. All original text present and accounted for. Pages are clean and clear with only minor spotting despite age. As was common with printed sermons, the printing and trimming of the pages is sometimes close to text, but no actual impacts or issues. Final page includes a list of additional publications by the two printers. This is an exceptional primary document from the Glorious Revolution which saw the only double crowning of two monarchs. Very good, lightly tanned with a couple of small closed tears, hand numbered to the odd pages 863-903. These trace the Fashoda Incident from 10 Dec 1897 to 12 Oct 1898 through letters, speeches, and reports, among the remarkable exchanges between Kitchener and Captain Jean-Baptiste Marchand. Marchand had led a small force overland to claim the area for France to undermine British control in Egypt and the Sudan, whilst Kitchener was in the process of defeating the Mahdi.

He regrets that Ellaby is asking him 'for more information than it is in my power to give you'. Even if he were 'in possession of the views of the Government' he 'could not disclose them' to Ellaby, who must form his own opinion 'from the public utterances of the Prime Minister and Mr. Balfour'. Having said this, Ellaby 'may take it that a strenuous resistance to Home Rule will be a main feature of the Unionist Programme at the next Election'. Salisbury's Conservatives won the 1892 general election without an overall majority. Salisbury's nephew Balfour led the party in the Commons.

Zustand: Good. Original platinum print 15 x 10cm. Portrait of Lord Robert Gascoyne-Cecil (1830-1903), from 1868 the 3rd Marquess of Salisbury. Born in 1830, he was known as Lord Robert Cecil before 1865 and as Viscount Cranborne from 1865 until 1868. Three times Prime Minister (1885, 1886-92, 1895-1902), he served for a total of over 13 years and was the first British Prime Minister of the 20th century.As Prime Minister, he tactfully encouraged the adherence of Joseph Chamberlain and the Unionists to strengthen conservative forces at home, and maintained a policy of diplomatic non-alignment, sometimes known as 'splendid isolation', in the later period of Britain's imperial greatness.

4pp., folio. Originally on a bifolium, but now with the two leaves separated and attached to a white stub from an album. In good condition, on aged and lightly-spotted paper, and trimmed at the head. Laid out in the conventional manner, With the reverse of the final leaf printed in landscape, so that the item can be folded into the customary package. The same page carries the 'Memorandum of Association' in small print, including 24 lettered 'objects for which the Company is established', including '(v) To acquire the right to levy taxes on Bicycles, Piano-Organs, Musical-Evenings, Wagners "Ring," Flashing Street Advertisements, Motor-Cars, Lord Mayor's Shows, Public Statues, Matinee Hats, Minor Poets, "Bloomers," Light Tenors, Professional Beauties, Golfers, Drawing-room Receiters, and Money-lenders.' The document begins with an Iinitial list of directors and other company officers, followed by the 'Prospectus' proper, beginning: 'THIS Company has been formed to acquire as a going concern the old-established business of the BRITISH EMPIRE, which deals in Colonies, Armies, Ironclads, Law Making, Treaty Ports, Coaling Stations, Post Offices, Telegraphs, Telephones, Public Education, Criminal Prosecutions, Pioneering, Fighting, Massacring, Civilising, Concession Granting, Prospecting, Mission Founding, &c., &c., and is believed to be the largest of its kind in the World.' The prospectus continues in the same vein, with a list of the 'principal Foreign Agencies of the business', from Aden to Zanzibar, adding: 'In addition to the properties enumerated above, the Company will acquire from the Vendors "spheres of influence" in all parts of the world.' References follow to 'the important asset known as the Suzerainty of the South African Republic', 'the "Open Door," situate in the Chinese Empire', 'prospecting expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic Regions', and other international affairs. There is also a description of the state of the books by 'Messrs. Olde Turk & Co.' C. R. Harrison, in his 'House of Harrison' (1914), explains the context of the satire: 'The twenty-second Christmas number of Truth devoted itself to a clever political satire entitled "The British Empire, Unlimited." Truth is, before all things, Liberal in its politics, and the aim of the satire was to poke fun and ridicule at the then Conservative Government, the author especially attacking the Marquis of Salisbury, who was Prime Minister, on the ground of his wide Imperial Policy and satirizing his well-known ability for administration and attention to detail. The story represents Lord Salisbury bringing out a gigantic Commercial Company entitled "The British Empire, Unlimited," to run the affairs of the nation on a commercial basis; he being Promoter and Director, and the other members of the Government and celebrities of the day each having his allotted post. The prospectus, like that of other commercial undertakings, was full of bold advertisement, and was prepared confidentially with a view to bursting on the public attention as a surprise.'.
